Martyrs

Martyrs is the most disturbing movie I’ve ever seen and it’s different from a lot of horror movies I have seen. The plot is simple, but the film doesn’t suffer from that. It’s keeping the accident thrill. It’s horrible but you don’t want to look away either. Not only through very explicit visualisations of violence but also through the extremely emotional demonstration of force this is one of the most disgusting movies I have watched so far. It reminded me of real torture, the concentration camps from WWII and the feeling of complete helplessness. Maybe it’s one of the best movies to show how wrong abusing other people through physical force really is.

Mirrors

Mirrors was very thrilling to see. The story is not very different from most horror movies, but it’s a good one. It’s scary, brutal and the end is genius. Kiefer Sutherland as Ben Carson is my personal highlight of the movie, reminding me a little of Flatliners. A broken man that is doubting his senses and though trying to stand against his fears. The other world, the one behind the looking glass is described as dark and horrible in this movie. If you like horror movies, see this one. Beware, the 18+ classification for German cinemas is justified. 8 of 10.

Krabat

The german production of Krabat (with some very cool german actors) was a disappointment. I expected a movie that was close to the book and not miles away like this pseudo romantic rape of the book model. The only nice adoption is the masters voice and force over his journeymen. A lot of conflicts, events and depht is lost compared to the book.
After all, I had expected more, but it’s 4 of 10. If you have the time to read the book, do it and don’t waste the money on the cinema (or bandwidth for the download).
If you know the book, the songs done by ASP on this topic may interest you. The album “Zaubererbruder” is dedicated to Ottfried Preußlers wonderful book.

The Happening

The Happening didn’t look too bad in the TV trailers so I and Julia went to see it. The start is pretty interesting and mystical but somehow the movie can’t keep that up until the end. The concept isn’t new, but not yet worn off. It reminds a lot of Frank Schätzings novel The Swarm. Anyone who likes the thought of nature striking back or the planet saving itself from mankind, read this book. There are nice shocking moments and nice fear generating scenes that makes you feel with the characters but in the end, it’s ruined by some pseudo-romantical scenes and not very believable details. 5/10

The Movie Kung Fu Panda is a worth watching. Just imagine the training scenes from Kill Bill and Star Wars featuring the fighting scenes from The Matrix and everything with funny animated characters from Ice age. Violá! Everyone who finds my description interesting is good to go, everyone else will maybe need some beer and some buddies to laugh his ass off ;) 8/10.

Sex and the city

Sex and the city is the worst movie I’ve seen in the last few month. It provides flat characters, superficiality and lots of hysterical and brainless chicks. The only few things I like are how the viewer is put into the place of the passive reader of Carries books. It’s supposed to be about love, but it’s not even a good love story. There just are no strong feelings, nothing compareable to Romeo and Julia or Love me if you dare. The intensity compared to Love me if you dare is like a man with a candle using the morse code compared to a megabit internet connection. It’s neither a reference when it comes to style or fashion like you would expect it to be and not hot or interesting when it comes to sex. It’s just four chicks facing problems that are directly funny to people who really have. Basically the plot of the first part is: “Treat your man like shit, give a fuck about his feelings and be pissed of harder than anyone if he dares to say something against it. Additionally you drag your 3 female friends who are dumb, sex addicted and paranoid into your story.” A positive thing is how the characters are adopted from the tv series. Nice facts: Carrie wants to marry Mr. Big, because she’s scared about having no place to live in case they split up. Carrie uses a MacBook (Apple computer) in the tv series, but hands Samantha her iPhone back in the movie, with the explanation, that she’s not able to use it (which reflects the unability to pick 1 of 9 large and clearly visible icons). We should keep in mind, that Apple is in the opinion of a lot of people producing the most userfriendly interfaces ever. Another fun fact: Miranda does not fuck her husband for half a year, gives him the feeling, that there is no time for him or sex with him and must make him feel like a dog from the street, gives her the right to throw him away like a used towel when he slept with another woman. I don’t think this movie has any morals, but the worst thing is, the movie itself seems to be convinced of it. So remember people: Don’t devote yourself. You are too important for everything else. Don’t forgive (if they don’t throw you diamonds). If you don’t support the slaughtering of animals for their skin, you’re a screaming insane person.

If this is the big dream of so many women, my big dream is to be conan the babarian swinging and axe through all their faces.

Big Buck Bunny!

big buck screenshotThe open movie project once again finished a wonderful shortmovie using blender. It’s hard to compare it to elephants dream directly, because these two are very different. Big Buck Bunny contains a lot more humor, it’s really funny to see. Go and watch it online or download it ;)

The Eye (ins Auge)

the eye posterLast saturday I was watching “The Eye” in Flensburg and I’m happy that no blind person ever will see this movie. It’s funny, that the main character (Jessica Alba) can walk without using her stick in public, even holding people back from being run over, but in her flat she’s slow as a snail, touching every wall. It’s a typical horror thriller with nice effects and a story that I have not seen before. Frame setting for our main character to “see things” is, that she receives a donation for a pair of eyes, that allow her to see again, that appear to have been owned by a girl with a special connection to the spiritual world. Nice to see are the things that happen to the main character and the shocking moments, but still, the best scene is the intro. The shocking moments sometimes are too long and only kept alive by the dramatical music.

5/10 After all, it was entertaining, so it’s an average movie with nice effects.

Girl, Interrupted

girl, interrupted pic

Girl, Intterupted is based on a true story, starring Winona Ryder and Angelina Jolie. We follow Susanna Kayson into a psychiatric institution and experience her ups, downs, new friends and enemies. I can only recommend this movie for everyone who ever had anything to do with psychial diseases. Reminded me of Gothica, because it too describes how powerless you are, once you’re in. 5/6

Solar, a trip to a foreign world

solar poster

Solar, the name of a short-movie, that was created by Ian Wharton & Edward Shires, two students, that just graduated from the Cumbria Institute of Arts. They won the “best-of-show” with their project Solar. The project itself took, according to Ian and Edward seven month to realize. The short-film itself is a great dip into another world that once more shows us the power of digital rendering. For the play time of 4.17 minutes, the Quicktime codec is needed. The making of is available too.
